Deep forests, small bays, fragrant macchia: once the home of the centaurs – according to mythology – the Greek peninsula between Athens and Thessaloniki has retained its character to this day and is considered a retreat for individualists seeking peace and quiet. The Parisian architect Nikolas Papamildiades and his wife Mimi have returned to their Greek roots here.

Between the small fishing harbour of Platanias and the beach of Kastri, on one of the Afeilianes hills, sit the four holiday homes of the same name. Nestled among the old olive groves, almond, fig and orange trees, the one-storey houses with their thick natural stone walls and the roof structure visible on the inside echo the traditional architecture of the region. At first glance, they appear somewhat out of date, but a closer look reveals the excellence of the selected materials and their workmanship.

Each of the four stone houses scattered across the hill is of different size. The smallest accommodation, House of the Orange Trees, is suitable for two people, the House of the Big Almond Tree sleeps four and the House of the Wild Olive Trees can accommodate up to five people. The same applies to the Houses of the Old Fig Tree, which combine two houses into one accommodation unit. Each of the holiday homes has a covered outdoor kitchen, an outdoor shower and an individual outdoor design on different levels. The interior is simple, yet has everything you need to sleep, dream, cook, barbecue and bake pizzas, eat, paint or write. The only thing you won’t find here is a television. After all, the windows and panoramic terraces offer an unrivalled view across the Pagasitic Gulf to the islands of Euboea and Podikonisi. And the private fruit and vegetable garden provides plenty of colourful and enjoyable moments.

Hiking on old cobbled paths, swimming in the sea, sunbathing, diving, canoeing, sailing, horse riding, enjoying the tranquillity of the house and being inspired by the view, introductions to Greek cuisine, gardening with the landlady Mimi, playing tavli with the landlord Nikos, a visit to changing art exhibitions or the Horto Festival in July and August with classical music, jazz music and theatre, joining in the celebrations at Panigiri, the annual village festival
