Seedorf 360°

Holiday home Seedorf 360°

Sailing and leisure boats line the long natural harbour of Seedorf, a historic fishing village between Neuensienersee and Greifswalder Bodden in the south-east of Rügen, surrounded by protected countryside. The 360° Seedorf holiday home is located on the highest point of the village – with a panoramic view and exciting backstory. Its shape and design are inspired by nothing less than a circumnavigation of the globe. After five years and 360 degrees of longitude sailed, architects Thomas Arnold and Birgit Klauck have created a house that borrows elements from shipbuilding, anchors itself in the regional building tradition with its thatched roof and gathers the family’s experiences under one roof.

The unusual architecture of the house was influenced by the local fishermen’s ‘boat stores’ – boats that had been turned upside down into shelters. With its larch wood façade and the partly thatched, partly green roof, the building blends in well.

Inside, it is not only the visible beech wood construction that is reminiscent of the frames of boats. To give each room a different perspective, the shape of the building was aligned with the visual axes. The extensive living room invites you to spend cosy hours on the sofa with its wood-burning stove, the long table offers space for dining together, and the open-plan kitchen looks out directly onto the lake, illuminated by the sunrise in the morning and the sunset in the evening. The two double bedrooms on the ground floor both have their own shower-bath, which is separated by a floor-to-ceiling work of art by Scottish artist Louise Gibson made of coloured resin blocks into which artefacts and found objects from sailing around the world have been cast. A beech wood staircase with diagonally stretched sail lines leads to the upper floor. To stay in the maritime context, the third double bedroom resembles a ship’s cabin, with a lookout over Seedorf harbour and the bay.

The garden offers wild flower meadows, fruit trees and herb beds with panoramic views from the marina across the lagoon-like bay of Having, the Greifswald Bodden and Lake Neuensien to the forest area with the Granitz hunting lodge.

What to do

Cycling and hiking in the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve or in the Jasmund National Park with its beech forests and the Königsstuhl chalk rock formation, sailing, swimming on the nearby sandy beach or one of the many other beaches, water sports of all kinds - from stand-up paddling, kayaking to water skiing, fishing, excursions to the glamorous seaside resorts of Binz, Sellin and Göhren, e.g. on the historic ‘Rasender Roland’ steam train, to the harbour in Sassnitz or to the maritime museum in Stralsund, tasting smoked fish and other typical culinary highlights. For example, take the historic ‘Rasender Roland’ steam train, visit the harbour in Sassnitz or the maritime museum in Stralsund, try smoked fish and other typical culinary highlights
