Project Ö – Skjulskäret

Holiday home Project Ö – Skjulskäret

It takes 20 minutes by boat from the coastal village of Kasnäs across the sea, past countless islands, some of which are deserted and others populated with colourful houses, until you reach Skjulskäret. A two-hectare, secluded island in the south-west of the Finnish archipelago. The southern part of the private island is covered in pine trees, while three glacier-carved rock fingers jut out into the Baltic Sea to the north. Their distinctive bays serve as moorings for Project Ö – an allusion to the Swedish word for ‘island’ and an extraordinary hideaway with which the owners Aleksi Hautamäki and Milla Selkimäki want to offer their visitors an authentic – aesthetic experience in the middle of the archipelago.

The sleek architecture of the three buildings of different sizes follows the contours of the island. With their functional structure, wide pitched roof, elongated gutters and wooden panelling, they pay homage to traditional construction methods and the local forests. Combined with Japanese minimalism, which is reflected above all in the narrow main building. All the individual rooms here have been designed to be as compact as possible without compromising on comfort. The south-facing, light-filled living room with kitchen made of black-stained birchwood faces a large tunnel stove with a cosy seating area.

All around, large windows frame the changing light moods from the forest to the sea. The furnishings, which combine Scandinavian classics and contemporary design in neutral tones, also blend in with the natural surroundings. One double room is located on the ground floor, the second on the mezzanine floor – with a view of the clouds and the starry sky. The outdoor area with seating space and outdoor kitchen for barbecuing, baking pizzas or smoking fish leads to the bathroom and the sauna. Here you can take in the spectacular view of contemplative solitude.

In the second wooden house, the workshop, built in solid log construction, you can not only realise your own craft projects, there is also an additional guest bed and a small loft with a double mattress.

The third building, a glass walled dining pavilion, is a short walk through the forest – a magical venue for home-cooked and served meals with its own kitchen, long table and magnificent views. Extensive pinewood walkways wind around the ensemble, anchoring the houses in the rocky surroundings. A small beach provides sheltered sunbathing, several campfire sites offer a suitable spot in any wind direction and those who want to warm up after a dip in the sea or on a cool summer evening can relax in the natural, wood-heated rock pool.

What to do

Swimming in the sea, bathing on your own sandy beach or in the natural pool, walks around the island, relaxing, reading, cooking, crafts in the workshop, sauna, nature and wildlife watching, e.g. Watching grey seals and seabirds, trips in the hotel's own kayak, rowing or motor boat, island hopping (many of the islands are just a hop away), e.g. trips to the Viking Museum on Rosala, to the Bengtskär lighthouse, on a bike tour across Örö or to one of the nearby restaurants. Larger boats with their own skipper can also be hired for other tours.

Why we like this house

Time out, peace and privacy take on a whole new dimension here - a scenic and aesthetic place far away from the hustle and bustle of the world.

This house is great for

Nature lovers and those seeking peace and quiet - whether families, couples, groups of friends, also perfect for inspiring workation or exclusive workshops

Sustainability
