South Tyrolean history with new impulses: the White Tower rises strikingly behind the walls of the Adler Historic Guesthouse. It is the landmark of the Cathedral City of Bressanone, which is known for its sacred buildings, picturesque arcades and stately town houses surrounded by majestic mountains. The hotel, located directly by the River Isarco and the Eagle Bridge, makes an architectural statement, too. The more than 500-year-old building with the cadastral number 1 was restored in keeping with its history and in close cooperation with the monument protection authorities, and translated into the present day with timeless elegance. While the refurbishment basically follows the motto “less is more”, the façade was extended by five historically relevant bay windows, which the architectural duo bergmeisterwolf discovered on old copper engravings and now give rhythm and contrast to the appearance.
Inside, the interior is as restrained as possible in order to allow the original substance with its stone floors, vaults and atriums to take effect. Existing visual axes and open spaces have been recreated to allow flowing connections – both between the rooms and between past and present. Due to the historical foundations and characteristics, the hotel’s 43 rooms all have different layouts. Some have a bay window, some a vaulted ceiling or a balcony. The views stretch from the inner courtyard over the river or the White Tower to Bressanone’s local mountain, the Plose. The furnishings remain true to the no-frills overall concept of light-coloured natural materials and South Tyrolean fabrics and woods.
This makes ‘The Pin’ stand out all the more – a trapezoidal construction resting on a narrow column that tapers upwards by three storeys. The extravagant structure complements the inner courtyard as a new element and catches the eye not only with its unusual shape, but also with its cladding of green glazed plain tiles. Movements and kinks in the façade and the shape of the roof create special settings as well as small balconies and terraces – individual retreat areas with great privacy. Another highlight is the pool on the roof terrace with a view over the old town’s rooftops. The Adler Historic Guesthouse also offers culinary delights for its guests – from breakfast and the day bar to the Finsterwirt restaurant and the Vitis wine bar just a short walk away.
