A green oasis with urban flair: light and air fill the open, bright architecture of Casa Joana. A retreat in the sun-drenched Algarve that celebrates laid-back outdoor living.
Once the main city and cultural, Moorish centre of the region, Silves is today a rather cosy little town in the hinterland, just a few kilometres from the popular Portuguese coast and the Serra de Monchique nature reserve. The holiday home Casa Joana – named after its architect Joana Dalmau Pinto – is located in the heart of the historic centre, in a quiet alley near the imposing castle. It is hard to imagine today that just a few years ago there was a ruin here that used to be a stable. From the outside, the simple façade doesn’t reveal that behind it hides an architecturally exciting, bright and spacious house in minimalist style, with high, nested rooms and three spectacular terraces.
Casa Joana offers space, peace and quiet for six guests to discover the Algarve. In addition to a bedroom with a bathroom on the ground floor, there are two further bedrooms with small but cosy bathrooms on the first floor.
The large kitchen flows seamlessly into a lounge with a cosy yellow sofa and a fireplace for cooler days. The white walls not only serve as furniture and shelves, but also open up unusual perspectives time and again. This effect is harmoniously complemented by the carefully composed interior of colourful art, sophisticated design and handmade ceramics.
As the ground floor can be opened up completely to the front and rear, the living space can be extended directly to the outside. Each of the three terraces, greened with tropical plants, takes on a different function: while the small pool on the front terrace invites you to have breakfast, the rear terrace has an outdoor kitchen and a large table where you can cook and eat together, accompanied by the chirping of the birds. For an aperitif in the sun, a shower in the open air or a glass of wine in the evening, it is best to visit the lounge on the roof terrace with a view over Silves and the starry sky.
