The historically significant village of La Oliva is located in the hinterland of the Canary Island Fuerteventura, not far from the most beautiful beaches in the north and surrounded by spectacular volcanic formations, vast plains and desert-like vegetation. The walls of Casa Montelongo date back to the 19th century and were once part of the elegant manor house of the culturally committed Montelongo family, who also integrated a stage for theatre plays, ballroom dancing and musical performances into their domicile. The u-shaped property with patio, typical of the region, has been transformed into an unusual hotel with two exclusive suites based on the remains of the original casa and the former theatre.
Architect Néstor Pérez Batista, who was born on Lanzarote and lives in Berlin, has combined regional architecture, art and modern design for the simple and impressive theatrical reinterpretation of the building, which emphasises the traditional materials of the island – stone, wood, clay and lime. The structure also remains in the regional context with flat, white façades and roofs. Each room is connected to the inner courtyard by a composition of openings of different sizes.
Each of the two suites – the ‘Old Theatre’ and the ‘Old House’ – is suitable for two people and has a spacious bedroom, a bathroom area with a freestanding bathtub and a kitchen with a long dining table and various seating areas. All areas flow seamlessly into one another, in the “Old Theatre” they are only separated by huge curtains or sculptural elements such as the wooden wardrobe. Both units are divided and connected by a shared pool in the inner courtyard. All the interiors are designed with almost museal minimalism. Furniture and accessories in contrasting primary colours and selected works by renowned Spanish artists create warm, subtle accents.
The patio is adorned with a sculpture by artist Óscar Latuag, which uses the abstract shapes of lichens, prickly pear cacti and penca leaves to emphasise the island’s rich natural heritage.
Although it is not easy to leave this meditative work of art, behind the walls a fascinating landscape designed by nature awaits the guests to be discovered.
