The special light of the two-lake region around Kochelsee and Walchensee on the edge of the Bavarian Alps inspired Franz Marc to create his works. Haus Herzogstand is just a stroll away from the museum of the important expressionist painter and co-founder of the ” Blaue Reiter” movement. Directly between the centre of the small, pretty village and the shores of the turquoise-blue Kochelsee.
The old “Bahnerhaus” is one of Kochel am See’s characteristic historical buildings and is considered a testimony to the region’s industrial history. Built in 1936 as a residence for the employees of the Isartal railway, which ran between Munich and Kochel and enabled the construction of the Walchensee power station, the building, which was in need of renovation, has been restored to its original form and given a new lease of life in recent years.
To create additional living space, the old roof truss was completely removed, the top floor was rebuilt in timber construction and the historic building was converted into bright, airy holiday apartments with great architectural sensitivity. All three units find a pleasant balance between authenticity, craftsmanship, simple furnishings and selected individual antique pieces as well as design classics.
In addition to a cosy living room with a modern interpretation of a wooden beamed ceiling and Swedish stove, a partly open-plan kitchen and a bright, friendly double bedroom, the covered south-facing balcony with retro flair offers a wonderful mountain view at any time of day.
While the two apartments Jochberg and Heimgarten are ideal for a break for two, the Sonnenspitz has an additional sofa bed and can also accommodate families of up to three people.
What to do
In summer, the Kochelsee and Walchensee lakes are ideal for swimming and various water sports activities (whether windsurfing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddling, sailing or diving), hiking and mountain biking (e.g. to the summits of Herzogstand, Heimgarten and Jochberg, to the Lainbach Falls or in the Karwendel mountains), climbing, cycling tours through the picturesque Loisach-Kochelsee moor, the Murnauer Moos or along the lakes, skiing, sledging or ski tours in the Seefeld in Tirol or Garmisch-Partenkirchen ski areas in winter, a visit to the Franz Marc Museum and excursions in the footsteps of Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter, relaxation in the Trimini crystal thermal spa, excursions to the Glentleiten open-air museum, Benediktbeuern Monastery, the hydroelectric power station or to the Bavarian royal castles of Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau and Linderhof
