Holidays with campus flair: Not only the fresh breeze, but also the reinterpreted brick architecture of the JAP Retreat Apartments in Wilhelmshaven reveal that the North Sea is only a few minutes away by bike. Located right next to the city park, the apartments are part of an interlocking ensemble in which architect Ulf Janssen, together with his wife and host Aleida, mixes living and working. The campus concept is already reflected in the shape and design of the building structure, which shields the building to the outside in order to open up the rooms towards the inside.
Different sized recycled facing bricks and matching mortar were developed and coordinated for the light grey façade in collaboration with the Danish clinker brick manufacturer Petersen Tegl. The homogeneous overall appearance is broken up by sporadically placed windows and doors as well as small views in and out, which play with the changing light mood and symbolise the masonry tradition.
Behind the clear brick façade a combination of bright living and working units are grouped around an inner courtyard. The three JAP Retreat Appartements vary in size and can accommodate up to three guests each. Comfortable beds, colourful bathrooms with large showers, cosy sofas to relax on, office corners and open-plan living areas with a kitchen and long dining table invite you to relax or get together. One of the bedrooms even has a freestanding bathtub. As the owners have been collecting furniture, lighting, art and 20th century classics for many years, many pieces were integrated into the interior design concept and combined with exclusive materials and a bold use of colour.
All three units have their own small garden with terrace or balcony. In the immediate vicinity is a co-working space as well as a small roof garden with raised vegetable and herb beds. As the architecture firm JAP is also part of the ensemble, interested guests have the opportunity to exchange ideas about design and architecture in person.
