Maison 10étangs

Holiday home Maison 10étangs

Wallonia in Belgium is characterised by a backdrop of small hills, river valleys, forests and fields. Inspired by the idyllic nature and numerous projects, architectural photographers Anne Champion and Jean-Luc Laloux have transformed a former fish farm near the village of Florennes with a stone house and shed from the last century into a spacious domicile with a residential house (Maison 10étangs) and an additional holiday home (Gîte 10étangs). For groups of up to 14 people, the Maison 10étangs can be rented exclusively so that guests have the entire property at their private disposal. Whether for holidays with the extended family, small celebrations, days together with friends or as a haven of peace for creative ideas. In addition to the atmospheric architecture, which combines old structures with modern details and timeless materials, there are twelve small lakes and ponds in the grounds, which can be used for swimming and ice bathing with their fresh spring water.

The living space of Maison 10étangs is as bright as the cows grazing in the pastures in front of the window fronts – a modern, extensively glazed extension with a green pitched roof that complements the historic natural stone house. A huge open space with a minimalist, cosy aesthetic unfolds between a construction of steel beams and a wooden ceiling. The monumental concrete kitchen island is ideal for communal cooking sessions, long solid oak wood brings everyone together at one table and the Scandinavian designer armchairs in front of the floating fireplace invite you to read, discuss and observe nature. When the weather is fine, the window front can be opened so that the living room opens out onto the garden.

The combination of materials – stone, oak wood from the neighbourhood, metal and concrete – runs through the entire house. This is complemented by colourful details and works of art by the owner as well as renowned design – from Shiro Kuramata, Sergio Rodrigues and Cappellini to Arne Norell and Pastoe. A wooden double door leads into the first part of the renovated building, whose immense ceiling height is divided by a gallery. A second living room with a small library and games corner awaits guests downstairs, while a separate home cinema with lounge chairs awaits upstairs. The three bedrooms form another harmonious combination of rough stone and warm wood, some old, some new. Complemented by unusually designed bathrooms. If you are looking for communal outdoor play space or want to relax, you will find numerous private and shared areas – from the pétanque court to the sun deck and outdoor cooking area – and almost every guest has their own natural pool.

What to do

Bathing and swimming in the ponds on your own property, playing pétanque, walking, hiking and cycling, e.g. a culinary bike tour through the Molignée valley, excursions to the Walloon capital Namur, the picturesque Dinant or Givet in the Ardennes, the abbeys of Maredsous and Maredret, the castles of Bioul and Freyr and the gardens of Annevoie and Bambois, canoeing on the Lesse or excursions to the picturesque neighbourhoods

Why we like this house

(Large) families and groups of friends, great for workshops; the Maison cannot be rented on its own, but only in combination with the Gîte 10étangs holiday home.
