Vila Slatina

Holiday home Vila Slatina

Vila Slatina is another project by owners Igor and Vanja, who are revitalising old rural structures under the name ‘Weinderer’ and transforming them into high-quality accommodation with a contemporary look and comfort. The former Viničarija (winery) is located amidst the sun-drenched hills of the Slovenian wine region of Štajerska near the Austrian border. A lovely, lively landscape north of the former cultural capital of Maribor. The centrepiece of the estate is the 120-year-old residential building, which once housed the workers of the large neighbouring farms. The renovation, which bridges the gap between then and now, focussed on preserving the original character as well as on the largely self-sufficient energy supply and environmentally conscious design.

On the outside, the black wooden façade and dark roof lend the building a modern yet timeless charm. Inside, the combination of clay walls, concrete, wood, glass and no-frills design in both, rich and pastel colours, creates a pleasant atmosphere between warm cosiness and contemporary clarity. The self-contained architecture of the house adapts to the hilly topography and is spread over various levels. Large windows, some of which are corner windows, provide plenty of natural light and picturesque views of the natural surroundings, for instance from the green sofa, which extends into the open-plan living area. Together with the historic beams of the roof truss and the gallery, it forms the communicative centre of the house. In addition to a simple oval dining table, there are other colourful highlights, such as the kitchen in soft pink and blue or the green-tiled fireplace.

At the rear of the house is a double bedroom with en-suite bathroom. A second bedroom and a bathroom are located on the first floor. Here too, the play of colours extends from the individual home accessories to the overall design of the spaces. On the gallery, you can work at a small desk and sleep in a king-size bed, which makes the house suitable for a total of six people.

Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors extend the living room to a terrace with a dining table and lounge, where you can enjoy local wines from the house’s private wine cellar as well as culinary delights from the region accompanied by a wonderful view. Guests also have their own sauna at their disposal. On the other side of the house there is a heated infinity pool with sun terrace and, one floor below, a pergola with outdoor kitchen.

What to do

As the house is located directly on the Štajerska Wine Road, which connects the Slovenian and Austrian wine routes, it is an ideal starting point for nature experiences and cultural excursions of all kinds: Hiking, cycling and mountain biking, exploring and tasting along the wine route, the nearby Pohorje mountain massif not only offers numerous hiking trails, but also the opportunity for winter sports, gourmet gastronomy, golf, tennis, paddling, a visit to the charming old town centre of Maribor with the oldest vineyard in Europe, excursions to the Renaissance castle of Svečina or to Ljubljana, Graz, Ptuj, Zagreb or the Logar Valley.
Maribor was named Alpine City of the Year in 2000 and was European Capital of Culture in 2012.
