Frisian and colourful: Waaster Jügem 8 – WJ8 for short – in the small, charming North Sea resort of Utersum is one of the few detached houses on the island of Föhr and, in addition to its (mono)chromatic architecture, has a particularly extensive garden with a partially unobstructed view.
At first glance, the newly built holiday home with its reused, historic red and white clinker bricks and thatched roof resembles the traditional Frisian houses of the region. Inside, it surprises with a generous 258 square metres, contemporary floor plans, high, bright rooms and modern furnishings.
As you enter the house, you find yourself in the open-plan kitchen with counter and dining area, whose double height is emphasised by the large sliding window and skylight and the white interior design. Two passages lead through to the adjoining living room, which invites you to spend cosy hours on the colourful sofa in front of the tunnel fireplace, which also warms the dining room on the other side. The five bedrooms for a total of eight people and the three bathrooms are spread over the attic and basement. The highlight on the top floor is certainly the oversized hammock, where not only children like to “hang out” and read. Occasional pink elements or brightly coloured furniture break up the clear, white interior design.
A second entrance, which can be reached via a wooden walkway, leads directly into the brightly coloured mud room, where – as the name suggests – dirty shoes, jackets, beach bags and supplies can be stored. Next to it is a spacious sauna area with its own shower and direct access to the garden. There is a barbecue for warm summer evenings and the garage is perfect for storing bicycles. These are the quickest way to get to the nearby beach.
What to do
Swimming and bathing, water sports of all kinds - from surfing to kiting to stand-up paddling, the most beautiful sunset on the island awaits you in the evening hours on the beach of Utersum, including a beach chair, which is freely available to guests of the house during their stay, otherwise you can take wonderful walks on the beach and explore the island by bike (bike hire right next door).
